MONEY, MONEY!!

Mathematics with Geography and Language Arts – 8th grade

 

This unit will be about learning about money in different forms:

1.          Keeping a checkbook

2.         Learning about the new money

3.         Making a budget

4.        Studying about costs of traveling

5.         Studying about the states

6.        Learning about foreign currency

 

 

GOALS

 

1.          The students will learn about money and budgets.

2.         The students will learn about travel vacations.

 

 

STANDARDS

 

1.     The student will use maps, globes, and other geographic tools to analyze physical features.

2.    The students will choose appropriate vocabulary to clarify and enhance ideas

3.    The students will write to record observations, communicate hypothesis and analyze information collected.

4.    Students will apply systems of measurements and use appropriate measurement tools to describe and analyze the world around them.

5.    Students will apply statistical methods to analyze data and explore probability for making decisions and predictions

 

 

 

ASSESSMENT

 

1.          The students will have a completed checkbook packet with all months balanced and reconciled.

2.         The students will make a presentation of their vacation (to a state) to the class and the 4th grade (who also study the states).

 

 

CONTENT

 

1.     The students will balance and reconcile their checkbooks.

2.    The students will study the different ways of making money and the different types of money.

3.    The students will learn about the 50 states.

4.    The students will make a budget.

 

 

PRIOR LEARNING INTEREST, MISCONCEPTIONS AND CONCEPTURAL DIFFICULTIES

 

          The students will have to know how to use the computer to research and work their calculator. They will be given choices, so for those that are not very creative, there are some choices for them.

LEARNING ACTIVITIES

 

Day 1          Introduce unit, talk about new bills, show video on new bills, look up treasury site on internet, go over currency names from other countries

Day 2         Go over directions from packet (checks, deposit slips, endorsements, direct deposit, ATM, auto pay options, online banking, savings account) Do a few worksheets on the above

Day 3         Do the month of January together (write checks, deposit slip, record transactions, reconcile)

Day 4         Work on packet during class, check your balance at the end of the month.

Day 5         Go to computer lab and look up information on the state of their choice. They will look up all basic information on their state and possible vacation spots.

                   They will use www.state.__.us with the underlined 2 lines being the states abbreviation

                   They will record their information on a worksheet.

Day 6         Continue in the computer lab looking up information for their state.

Day 7         The students will continue working on their checkbook unit. They should be in the month of April. They must show me how far they are to be checked off the sheet.

Day 8          Take our tour of the local bank and Sioux Falls Bank. The students will write a reaction paper to the tour.

Day 9          We will discuss what a budget is and do an example on the board of a household budget. We will discuss the things you need to pay for on a vacation (ex. Tips, taxis, and taxes on hotels). They then will get their assignment sheet for their project.

You are going to a trip to your state. You have $1000.00 to spend on your trip. You must leave from St. Mary’s Middle School in Dell Rapids. You are to design a presentation on your trip.

 

Requirements:

1.     You must have a budget. If you need more than what you have you may apply to the bank (Ms. Harms) for a loan.

2.    You must have a day-by-day plan.

3.    You must include state facts.

4.    You must include a map with all appropriate markings.
